Aras Keynote – Peter Schroer, CEO

Aras CEO and Founder, Peter Schroer got the show on the road with the community update where he announced several things including:

  • The Aras Community for Automotive Innovation with a new Aras office in Detroit
  • Dr. Martin Eigner, founder of Eigner & Partner, joins the Aras Advisory Board
  • A strategic partnership with Altium

Peter also discussed the importance of PLM scalability as the value of PLM is in wide usage across departments globally, as well as suppliers, outsourced manufacturing partners and customers.

He provided an overview of the industry's largest independent testing which validated optimal performance and resource utilization of Aras Innovator 10 on SQL Server 2012 with over 125,000 concurrent users. You can read the full PLM scalability report to learn more.

He went on to explain how further testing was done with Aras Innovator 10 on SQL Server 2014 which scaled to over 1 Million named users and 250,000 concurrent users. Stay tuned for the results in this upcoming paper. Both of these tests were done by independent validation firm Logic 20/20 with the help of Microsoft and HP.

He also issued a PLM Community challenge: How can we all make PLM fun... engaging, productive? He suggested Simpler User Interfaces, more Mobile, iterative & agile deployments that ensure that end-user enhancement requests are answered quickly, and Integrating PLM within the everyday tools like Office, CAD, Dashboards and other systems that make it easy for users.

He ended with "Just Simply Works" because as he puts it, "PLM only works if the end-users want to use it."

Building a PLM Skyscraper – Schrader Electronics

Everyone looks at implementing a PLM system slightly differently and for Schrader, implementing PLM is like building a PLM skyscraper. Before you begin building (or implementing) you need to build a solid foundation with a strong team, requirements, and partner to work with. Then construction starts from the ground up. For Schrader this meant a basic Part Master, BOM Management, Document Management, and ERP integration. They have more floors coming on their PLM skyscraper and are confident Aras was the right choice.

Leading Med Device Developer Drives Expansion and Overcomes Regulatory Challenges with Aras PLM

Auditdata, the market-leading provider of audiology products, was facing some big challenges as the company moved from being a pure software company to being a software and hardware company.

With products including clinics software, a cloud-based office management software for patient data, and hardware to test hearing, Auditdata was growing rapidly, but their business processes failed to keep up.

"We were facing an explosion in complexity, with a lot of new hardware coming in that, among other things, expanded our regulatory compliance and challenges," said Dan Haugbøl, QA & Regulatory Manager at Auditdata.

Prior to implementing Aras, the company had many isolated systems – different databases, multiple legacy systems, and numerous file servers. With Aras, there’s “fewer systems and greater consistency,” said Haugbøl.

Auditdata selected Aras PLM for its comprehensive functionality and flexibility, which, according to Haugbøl "enables us to accelerate into the collaborative and synchronized PLM world."

How do you ensure success with PLM? We've put together a complete guide of best practices for PLM implementation but to get you started, here are a few tips:

  1. Use an iterative approach. Start with a well-defined problem and implement the solution in manageable phases that comprise the complete project.
  2. Gather requirements at a high level. Plan near tern phases in detail and longer term phases more loosely as they will likely change in scope over time.
  3. Involve users early and often. Users drive requirements, develop use cases, validate prototypes and more.
  4. Don't underestimate the value of training. Train your team early in the process so they are familiar with Aras.
  5. Test. Test. And test again. Create visual and behavioral prototypes to test and validate with users.

ACE Japan is in full swing this week, attracting users of the Aras PLM suite as well as product lifecycle specialists, analysts and developers.  The Aras Community Event (ACE) in Tokyo included 300 attendees and dozens of different presentations on how Aras is being used at leading companies in Japan and beyond to drive innovation.

One of the featured presentations at ACE Tokyo was on multi-CAD file management given by Hiroshi Sakurai of Jamco, a company that maintains aircraft and manufactures interior parts for aircraft or equipment.  Mr. Sakurai noted that Aras has been invaluable in Jamco’s management of CAD files from seven different systems.

Aras CEO Peter Schroer also spoke on the rapid adoption and growth of the PLM suite in Japan, and the need to serve the requirements of the region’s high-tech industries such as automotive and industrial equipment.

Below is a summary of Peter Schroer’s remarks in Japanese.

Aras and the Aras Community in Japan are following up this event with ACE Osaka on Friday.

Sweet PLM – Optimizing New Product Development with Aras

Kinnerton Confectionary is the UK’s largest independent manufacturer of chocolate and novelty confectionary.  Their extensive product lines include chocolate bars, lollies, advent calendars and Easter eggs. Kinnerton also specializes in character licensing, which means licensing the rights to a popular movie or cartoon character and creating new products around it.

Half of Kinnerton’s product line is seasonal, such as Easter eggs in the spring and advent calendars for Christmas, so sales and profitability rely heavily on the company’s ability to get new products to market very quickly and efficiently. A missed deadline could result in millions of unsold seasonally themed candies.

Together with a rapidly expanding product portfolio, and the challenges and requirements of managing license and royalty fees, Kinnerton’s processes for new product development and introduction were growing overly complex and unwieldy.

Kinnerton knew there had to be a better way and began evaluating PLM systems. The company chose Aras for its flexibility and ease of deployment.

Kinnerton’s Aras deployment began with a pilot focused on a basic product development process, which transformed the company’s processes by improving visibility enterprise-wide.  With Aras, Kinnerton enabled its teams to think strategically, meet critical product deadlines, and establish formal product processes - saving time and money.

Pretty Sweet, eh?
